Snow /Ice Facts
When we say"several inches of snow are coming" that usually means 3"or more inches.
Snowflakes are made up of ice crystals.
The average snowflake falls at a speed of 3.1 miles per hour.
The largest snowflakes ever recorded fell in the state of Montana in the United States of America. The snowflakes were
15 inches in diameter.
All snowflakes have six sides.
Believe it or not, snow is actually clear/transparent. Snow appears white because the crystals act as prisms.
The term snow storm can describe a heavy snowfall while
a blizzard involves snow and wind.
Snow shower is a term for an intermittent snowfall, while flurry is used for very light, brief snowfalls.
Once the snow is on the ground, it will settle under its own weight (largely due to differential evaporation)
until its density is approximately 30% of water.
The largest known piece of ice to fall to earth was an ice block 6 meters (20 ft) across that fell
in Scotland on 13 August 1849.
